For decades, spinal fusion was considered the only surgical option for many back and neck problems. While it can relieve pain, it also permanently restricts movement in the fused area and may lead to future stress on nearby segments.
At Spine Motion Institute, we specialize exclusively in fusion-free treatments such as artificial disc replacement and other motion-preserving procedures. These options are designed to:
Relieve pain at its source
Maintain natural motion in your spine
Reduce recovery time so you can return to normal life faster
Lower the risk of needing future surgeries
Whether you’ve been told you “need a fusion” or you’re seeking a second opinion, our surgeons will help you explore all your options and create a plan that puts your long-term mobility and quality of life first.

Every spine is different. That’s why we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatments.
At the Spine Motion Institute at Rhea Medical Center, we take a personalized, multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating spine conditions, helping you find the right solution for your pain and lifestyle.
Motion Is The Mission

Whether it’s a walk with someone you love or time spent doing what brings you peace, these moments are worth protecting. We help you preserve your motion so you can stay present, connected, and fully engaged in the life you love.

With personalized, motion-preserving care, we help you stay active, upright, and in control of your life again. From morning stretches to evening walks. We’re here to help you rebuild from the inside out.

You were meant to move, and we’re here to help you do it without hesitation. Let’s take discomfort out of the equation and get you back to yoga, walking, or whatever keeps you grounded.
Motion-preserving, non-fusion procedures are surgeries that treat spine problems while keeping the bones in that part of the spine able to move, instead of permanently joining them together with a fusion.
Cervical disc replacement is a surgery that removes a damaged disc in the neck and replaces it with an artificial disc to relieve pressure on nerves while keeping the neck flexible and able to move normally.
Lumbar disc replacement is a procedure that removes a worn-out or injured disc in the lower back and replaces it with an artificial one, helping reduce back pain while allowing normal spine movement.
Spinal decompression surgery relieves pressure on the spinal cord or nerves by removing parts of bone, ligaments, or disc material that are pressing on them.
A foraminotomy is a surgery that opens or widens the space where a spinal nerve exits the spine, helping relieve pain, weakness, or numbness caused by nerve compression.
Minimally invasive spine surgery uses small incisions and special tools to repair spine problems with less muscle and tissue damage, which can mean faster recovery and less pain after surgery.
In a laminectomy, a surgeon removes the entire back part of a spinal bone (called the lamina) to take pressure off the nerves, while in a laminotomy only a small section of the lamina is removed to achieve the same goal.
Cervical fusion reversal is a complex surgery that removes a previous neck fusion and replaces it with an artificial disc, helping some patients regain neck movement and reduce stiffness.
Facet joint replacement is a surgery that removes worn or damaged joints in the spine and replaces them with artificial ones to restore stability and allow normal movement.
